If what you're doing isn't working at all, you need to go back to the drawing board and do 2 things: - Brainstorm for new growth experiments that are radically different from what you're currently doing; and
- Summon the courage to actually make those changes.
I can't promise it will yield the outcome you want. But I can promise you it will yield a different outcome. Shake things up, hard Obviously if what you're doing is working, stay the course. But if what you're doing isn't working, you can't afford to stay the course or make incremental changes. It won't move the needle; you're wasting valuable time. "Oh, I'm going to change the wording on my site, I'm going to change the colors/graphics and run yet another A/B test, I'll keep posting content on my socials that gets no engagement, maybe create yet another YouTube video that nobody watches, maybe blast off more annoying cold emails..." Nuh uh, it's not working -- you need to be honest with yourself. You need to make big changes, and some examples include: - Changing your positioning altogether and targeting a different market
- Looking for new partnership opportunities (e.g. newsletter sponsorship, listing on directories)
- Trying a new and "intimidating" marketing strategy (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Facebook ads, etc.)
- Changing your business model entirely (e.g. get rid of monthly subscriptions in favor of one-time payments)
- Dumping your whole business idea -- start from scratch (nuclear, painful, but necessary in some cases)
Time to brainstorm I don't know what your business is, but you do. What can you do in your business that would qualify as a big change? What is something that's so crazy, that has crossed your mind, and that you suspect might just work if you only had the courage to pull the trigger? Whatever that is, you need to do it. Pronto. The silver lining of no traction When you have no traction, you have an advantage, which is you have nothing to lose. The opportunity cost of trying something completely different, or "screwing it up," is near zero. What do you have to lose at this point? Or in the words of my famous pantsuit lady: "What difference, at this point, does it make?" Go forth and do it.
With thanks, Jay
