Welcome to the Teacher Tech community! We're excited to have you join us on this journey of creating engaging, effective, and empowering learning experiences for your students. Our community values student-centered learning, pedagogical integrity, and the thoughtful integration of technology to enhance, not replace, your expertise.

Technology integration isn't just about using technology for the sake of it. It's about understanding that while technological literacy for both you and your students is important, technology also holds the power to truly improve teaching and learning. "Paperless is not a pedagogy" is our motto, and we encourage you to embrace a balanced learning environment that thoughtfully integrates both technology and non-digital tools.

When we choose to use technology, let's consider what the tool uniquely allows for that would be difficult or impossible without it. Digital tools have their place, and my goal is to help you navigate where that is and how to make the effort worthwhile.

By focusing on the 5 E's, fostering the 4 C's, and moving beyond substitution with technology, you'll create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that empowers your students to thrive in the 21st century.

Let's delve into how you can create an engaging and effective learning environment that aligns with our shared values:

Embrace the 5 E's Lesson Plan Model:

The 5 E's (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) are your roadmap to student-centered learning.

• Engage: Spark curiosity with a captivating question, a surprising phenomenon, or a real-world problem. Get the students excited about the lesson!
• Explore: Encourage hands-on activities, experiments, or simulations that allow students to actively investigate the topic.
• Explain: Ideally, it is the students who explain the concepts after the explore period. However, this might be where a direct instruction lesson is provided. Aim for active student engagement by using technology tools to allow all students to engage with the lesson rather than the one or two who raise their hand.
• Elaborate: After exploring and explaining, strive to have students go beyond mimicking. Elaborate is the practice portion of the lesson, but we also want students to engage in critical thinking to expand on what they learned.
• Evaluate: Assess student learning through a variety of authentic assessments, including self-reflections, peer feedback, project presentations, or digital portfolios. Assessments do not have to be a test! There are many ways to evaluate if students have learned.

Foster the 4 C's:

Weave collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creative thinking into every lesson:

• Collaboration: Why do I love Google Workspace tools? COLLABORATION!! That being said, I am not a fangirl of Google (I know, it does seem like it.) I don't care what tools we use so long as we are considering how students are the center of the learning! Every day, how will students engage in some level of collaboration?
• Communication: An essential skill that employers are looking for. Completing assignments with right answers is not communication. The clear communication of ideas is challenging. In some cases technology can provide more opportunties for more students to communicate their thinking.
• Critical Thinking: Dr. Norman Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DOK) has 4 levels. Consider each day how you can "Live in DOK 2 and 3, Visit DOK 1 and 4" - Shelley Burgess
  
  💥DOK 1: Memorize, recall, follow algorithms. Sadly, many textbooks focus on DOK 1 tasks. Here at Teacher Tech we want to help you with elevating to higher DOK levels.
  
  💥DOK 2: Skill/Concept. DOK 2 involves engaging in some mental processing beyond a habitual response as well as decision-making about how to approach the problem or activity. This category can require conceptual understanding and/or demonstrating conceptual knowledge by explaining thinking in terms of concepts.
  
  💥DOK 3: Strategic thinking. My quick and dirty for this is "Make a claim and justify it with evidence." At the DOK 3 level we would not expect students to get it right the first time but to engage in productive struggle to make sense of complex ideas.
  
  💥DOK 4: Complex reasoning. We oftentimes mistake HARD for complex. A task can be HARD but still DOK 1. DOK 4 is not the goal, oftentimes this is a summative project and something that takes time. Not that it has to be. Connecting what they have learned to new situations is a potential example of DOK 4.
• Creative Thinking: Is every student doing the same thing, answering the same way? That is not creative thinking. Creativity is not necessarily art (please include art), but rather thinking for themselves and coming up with creative solutions or approaches.

Move Beyond Substitution with Technology:

The SAMR model is a framework for how you are using technology. Substitution is using a digital tool to do the same task that you did non digitally. Easy example is to type your essay instead of handwrite it.

At Teacher Tech we want to help you to elevate your technology use beyond the substution level.

👉A stands for "Augment" in SAMR which would indicate that there has been an improvement to the task. For example you can substitute a paper quiz with a Google Form. However, Forms elevates the task by allowing for embedding multi-media such as video.

👉M stands for "Modification" in SAMR, which indicates that the task has been significantly redesigned. For example, instead of simply using Google Forms as a digital substitute for a paper quiz, you can leverage its real-time data collection and analysis features to modify your lesson plan on the fly. By quickly assessing student responses and identifying areas of confusion, you can adjust your instruction in the moment to address specific learning needs, making your teaching more responsive and effective.

👉R stands for "Redefinition" in SAMR, the highest level of technology integration, where technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously inconceivable. Students being able to participate live in a lesson from anywhere in the world was impossible 50 years ago!
