Labels are a useful concept because they help us describe things quickly.

But when they are applied to people, especially ourselves, not so much.

You might say...

“I’m bad with numbers.”
“I’m not creative.”
“I’m the shy one.”
“I’m not good at business.”

And you'd think these were just harmless observations with some truth in them. But the moment they become labels you give yourself, your brain begins working to prove them right.

You stop trying certain things and reinterpret every experience to fit the label.

An awkward conversation becomes proof you’re “socially awkward” and a failed project becomes proof you’re “not cut out for business.”

The danger is that before long, the label becomes part of your identity, directing your life rather than describing it.

But these kinds of labels describe what has happened so far, not what is possible next.

And when you stop repeating them, you give yourself room to change.

Instead of “I’m bad at this,” the story becomes “I haven’t learned this yet.”

It’s a small shift in language, but a huge shift in freedom.

Because the less tightly you hold onto labels, the easier it is to grow beyond them.

So, don't carry every description of your past into your future and stop repeating unhelpful labels.

As a first step this week, think about the labels you'd like to shed and catch yourself when you say or think them. 💖

Bonus AI Idea: Ask AI to help you reframe labels, for example "Turn this fixed label into growth-focused statements that leave room for improvement: 'I'm no good in front of a camera.'" and you'll get reframes like

“Video is a skill I can improve with practice.”
“I may feel awkward on video now, but that’s normal when learning.”
“My first videos may be rough, but that’s part of getting better.”
“Video is just another skill I can learn.” 🤔
